Order of Red and White, 2011
Floorboards, paint, carpet, dyed fabric. 320 x 500 x 380 cm.
The installation stretches across a rectangle encircled by lengths of fabric. The room is red and white. It is a kind of stage with a floor made of boards which alternately are painted red and white. In the middle of the floor there is a carved pentagram (a five-pointed star) in which several layers of red and white carpet create a concentrated centre. The choice of colors and the flag-look of the floor makes one think of states and nationalism. The installation has a solemn atmosphere. The room appears sacred and cultic, both because of its relative emptiness, the consistent choice of colors and the many layers of meaning included in the star.
The project is generously supported by the Danish Arts Foundation.
