The permanent art commission for Sdr. Omme Prison is rooted in the understanding that art can serve as a catalyst for psychological and social transformation. In an environment defined by confinement and routine, the presence of artworks introduces alternative perspectives and subtly humanizes the space, offering both inmates, staff and visitors a means of engagement beyond the institutional framework.
The commission is conceived as a cohesive, site-responsive narrative, with interventions placed to punctuate the daily experience: tiles in front of the gate building, a perforated metal fence with intricate motifs enclosing the playground. Graphic concrete drawings, brass lamps and patterns in perforated metal adorning the residential buildings. A golden metal wave with corona lighting animates the community house façade, a brass stone breaks through the roof plane, and a handmade glass work redefines the window section.
For inmates and staff, who spend extended periods within these walls, the artworks become an integral part of their environment. The interconnected narratives of the pieces ensure that, over time, new layers of meaning emerge, rewarding repeated observation. The prison is thus recast as a layered, evolving space, where the community house, with its pulsing light in the dark hours, serves as a symbolic and spiritual focal point. The artworks contribute visual richness, moments of levity, and a sense of depth, reinforcing the community house as the emotional core of the compound.
Accompanying the physical installations is a coloring book featuring drawings from the project and a story by author Christina Hesselholdt. Distributed to children visiting inmates across Denmark’s prisons and detention centers, the book extends the commission’s reach, offering a tangible connection to the artistic process and serving as a link between the child’s home and the incarcerated parent.
The book is designed by Studio Claus Due.
The special tiles for the circles in front of the prison are produced in collaboration with Hagemeister Brickworks and Steffensten.
The glass is produced at Hebsgaard Glaskunst.
The brass stone is produced at Broncestøberiet Peter Jensen.
The brass lamps are produced by Louis Poulsen.
The glowing wave on the facade is produced by Lysiplex.
