Native, Exotic, Normal / Circle of Flags, 2016
12 flag poles, colored fiberglass. Two of each: 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 m.
12 flags, polyester. Two of each: 133 x 175, 152 x 200, 170 x 225, 186 x 250, 208 x 275, 227 x 300 cm.
Special project at Roskilde Festival, Roskilde, Denmark.
12 flagpoles are erected in a circle. The poles and the hoisted flags are dyed in different nuances of skin colors. The flags are monochromes, and devoid of the markings or divisions known from most national flags. The flagpoles differ in height, with the lightest skin color as the tallest and the darkest skin color as the shortest.
The title is taken directly from the names paint dealers and the cosmetics industry give skin tones, like Toffee, Native, Exotic, Peach and Normal. These defining labels are in the installation combined with the varying heights of the poles.
Those hierarchies embedded in the work reflect oppressive structures in society. But the color palette on the other side represents a broad range of skin tones, embracing and inviting all people into a unifying community. In this perspective, the flags also become a protest against nationalism and a call for humanism and diversity in spite of the structures that permeates our societies.
